For nearly three decades, Dr. Zafarghandi has been one of the highly prominent names in the academic medical community and Iranian regulatory bodies for healthcare professionals.
An accomplished academic medical physician, vascular & trauma surgeon, medical researcher, and manager, Dr. Zafarghandi prior to be elected as the president, served as the chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (1997-2005). He has served as the President of Iranian Medical Council from 2001 to 2005 as well.
Dr. Zafarghandi’s career as a prominent vascular surgeon and distinguished professor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) which is one of the highest ranking Iranian medical universities has been rather remarkable. Following his pioneering contributions to vascular & endovascular surgery, the first approved ward of Vascular & Trauma Surgery was established in 1994 in TUMS.
Dr. Zafarghandi became Head of the mentioned Ward and has led it since 1997.
By running Vascular & Trauma Surgery Course in 1999, he has made remarkable contributions to the intellectual advancement of academic vascular & endovascular surgery nationwide.
Based on his consistent efforts, Iranian Scientific Association of Trauma was founded in 2008.
The society seeks to advance excellence and innovation in this particular medical field through education, advocacy, research and public awareness. He serves as ISAT President.
Dr. Zafarghandi received his medical doctorate from Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and completed his specialist training in General Surgery and fellowship in Trauma & Vascular Surgery in TUMS and Shahid Behesti University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) respectively.
Dr. Zafarghandi’s research focuses on vascular surgery diseases and trauma and is acclaimed nationally for his unsurpassed and unique dedications to the profession. He has published more than 70 papers and has been the author of 9 medical books.
He has produced an array of presentations in national as well as international medical congresses and has received numerous honors and awards.
A former TUMS Chancellor, IRIMC President and Vice-President of Health Minister, received highest vote of General Assembly in February 2019 and elected as the President of Iranian Medical Council for a new term.
The General Assembly is the main deliberative Assembly of the IRIMC that serves as its parliament.

All Iranian medical, dental and pharmaceutical associations are affiliated to IRIMC and it regulates bi or multilateral collaborations between health care professionals and other associations and organisations nationwide.
IRIMC represents more than 281,400 registered members including general practitioners, specialist and sub-specialists in medicine, general dentists, specialists in dentistry, pharmacists and other licensed health care workers (such as physical therapists, optometrists, and the like)
