According to Iranian Society of Nephrology (IrSN), Dr. Broumand was the first American Board Certified nephrologist who became the president of Iranian Society of Nephrology in 1976 and held this position for 4 years. In 2001, he was elected again as the president of IrSN for a term of 5 years.

An official letter has been sent to Dr. Broumand by ISN President & ISN Programs Chair on 19 November 2014 to inform him about the proclaimed award which is available on IrSN website.

"On behalf of the International Society of Nephrology, it is our great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected as the recipient of the 2015 ISN Pioneer Award for the Middle East.

The Pioneer Awards recognize outstanding and sustained contributions to the establishment and development of nephrology in the various emerging regions of the world. Nominations were sought from ISN Regional Boards and evaluated by the ISN Core Program Committee. One individual was selected from each region and then ratified by the ISN Executive Committee and Council.

Dr. Broumand, this award recognizes your remarkable leadership as the initiator of both nephrology and kidney transplantation in Iran. As clinician, researcher and educator, despite many challenging circumstances, you have continued to show the way. You have been a fine role model, innovator, and leader, enabling the sustained development of nephrology in your country." 

The phrases cited above is from Dr. Giuseppe Remuzzi, ISN President-who according to the Lancet article is a pioneer in nephrology with very significant contributions to public health initiatives especially in developing countries- and ISN Programs Chair.

Dr. Zali, IRIMC President and Dr. Seyedan, IRIMC President Councilor in International Affairs acknowledged Dr. Broumand's consistent effort and his exceptional and eminent contributions to the development of nephrology in Iran as well as our region. They extended their warm congratulations to him for this well deserved honor.
