Joined by ministers and MPs, numerous prominent healthcare professionals, elected IRIMC officials and directors, Dr. Fazel inaugurated as the new IRIMC President and officially began a new term.
In leading the nation’s largest organization in the field of medicine, Dr. Fazel will focus his tenure on putting forward IRIMC objectives and strategy to protect the honor, sanctity and dignity of the medical profession; enhance healthcare professionals satisfaction and practice; cooperate with competent authorities to amend health insurance system, medical schemes and RBRVS; and take an active role in setting medical tariffs and practice management.
In the beginning of the ceremony, Dr. Zali (Immediate Past President) took the podium and mentioned IRIMC accomplishments during his presidency and in particular the unprecedented achievements in international affairs. Dr. Zali was given a magnificent farewell by IRIMC President, IAS President, ministers and MPs. Iranian Medical Council strongly appreciated Dr. Zali’s consistent efforts as IRIMC President especially in raising the international profile of this organization.
A former IRIMC President and Health Minister, Dr. Fazel won a landslide victory by receiving highest vote of IRIMC General Assembly in September 2017. In the inauguration ceremony held yesterday, he was officially appointed by president of the country as IRIMC President for a term of four years.
An accomplished surgeon, medical scientist and university distinguished professor; Dr. Fazel is recognized nationally for his unmatched dedications to the profession. He has produced an array of invited and peer-reviewed publications and presentations and has received numerous honors and awards.
Dr. Fazel received his medical doctorate from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and completed his residency in General Surgery and fellowship in Vascular Surgery in Write State University, USA. Considering his outstanding academic record and his pioneering contributions to the field of surgical procedures and research, he became Assistant Clinical Professor at Write State University, Dayton, USA, President of Dayton Surgical Society and Fellow of American College of Surgeons (FACS).
The Distinguished Professor of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Fazel is an internationally recognized leader in vascular surgery and organ transplantation and has made remarkable contributions to the intellectual advancement of academic surgery and organ transplantation nationwide.
He is the founder of Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences consisting of 135 Honorary and Associate Members and acted as its president for 19 years that reached remarkable achievements.
In 1984, he founded Iranian Association of Surgeons (IAS) to promote the highest standards of surgical care through ongoing conferences and CPDs. He has been IAS President since its establishment.
Dr. Fazel has dedicated his professional career to save people’s lives in wartime and afterward by gaining legal and ethical approval for organ transplantation from deceased donors which is undoubtedly a turning point in surgical treatments. Because of his consistent efforts, the first religious approval for cadaver organ transplantation was issued in 1989. He established National Renal Transplantation Program resulting in improving patients’ lives and was president of Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation (MESOT) from 1992 to 1994.
Dr. Fazel’s research focuses on vascular injuries and renal failures in severely injured patients as well as organ transplantation.
Dr. Iradj Fazel serves as IRIMC President and leads nation’s largest and most influential organization in the field of medicine.
