The celebrated and renowned Iranian director and Palme d’Or award winner, Mr. Abbas Kiarostami, passed away on 4 July which came as great sorrow to Iranian cineastes and cultural officials as well as the public.  All Iranians and Film Worlds mourn the loss of an icon who was “a highly sophisticated, self-possessed master of cinematic poetry.”

Earlier this week, hundreds attended a candlelight vigil in honor of Mr. Kiarostami, Iran’s icon of contemporary cinema.

Dr. Zali extended his sincere condolences following death of Mr. Abbas Kiarostami, the celebrated and renowned Iranian director and Palme d’Or award winner and through an official letter sent on 9th July to his French counterpart, asked CNOM President for cooperation regarding death of Mr. Kiarostami.

"Iranian Medical Council as the nation's largest independent organization in the field of medicine which registers and supervises all health care professionals in Iran is deeply concerned about the death of Iranian acclaimed director.

As the president of Iranian Medical Council, I extended my sincere condolences for the death of our national cultural icon and set up an assembly of experts to scrutinize thoroughly his medical records in Iran. As he passed away in France, I highly appreciate if we can establish a framework for cooperation in this process.

I highly appreciate if we will be aware of French medical expert panel and Mr. Kiarostami physicians’ legal opinion about Mr. Kiarostami’s health condition and death. In compliance with all legal considerations, it would be appreciated if Iranian Medical Council can receive his medical records in France.” Dr. Zali remarked.

The letter is as follows:

Cher Docteur Patrick BOUET,

Dr. Alireza Zali

Président

Dr. Shima Naghavi, Director of International Affairs
