In an official letter addressed to UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures, Dr. Zafarghandi emphasized on the negative and adverse impact of the re-imposed US unilateral sanctions on Iranian public health conditions & urged UN to pursue all necessary measures to save people’s lives and to prevent humanitarian crisis.

The letter of IRIMC President to Mr. Idriss Jazairy is as follows:

NP/IMC/1126

16 July 2019

The Honorable Mr. Idriss Jazairy,

The Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of the unilateral coercive measures

Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights

The United Nations

As the President of Iranian Medical Council which is the advocate of patients’ rights and one of the main national health policy makers, I would like to draw your attention to the negative and adverse impact of the re-imposed sanctions on Iranian public health conditions following unilateral US withdrawal from JCPOA on 8th May 2018.
According to Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

  1. Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
  2. Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

The current restrictions on banking and shipping have dramatically affected importing of life-saving medicines resulting in health crisis for Iranian people.

Access to essential medical and pharmaceutical products is the basic right of people and any sanctions that target it is against Universal Declaration of Human Rights and accepted morals.

To save people’s lives and to prevent humanitarian crisis, I urge United Nations to pursue all necessary measures.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience and your urgent attention to this matter would be highly appreciated.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr. Mohammadreza Zafarghani

President
